Key Takeaways from RSNA 2022
Since Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895, the growing ability to detect illnesses early, combined with growth in portable devices, has led to an increasing demand for medical imaging equipment on a global scale.
A by-product of solid market growth in the medical imaging sector is the growing demand for remote support and onsite maintenance of medical imaging equipment.
So, last week, Veritek Sales & Marketing Director Adrian Clark and Business Development Manager Paddy Collins escaped the rainy UK and boarded a plane to meet and network with leading medical OEMs at the world’s premier scientific and educational forum in radiology.
The event: RSNA 2022
The location: McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois
The key theme: Empowering Patients and Partners in Care. The event aimed to illustrate the dynamic role imaging plays in disease management and multidisciplinary collaboration.
While 25,000 delegates took advantage of the 400 courses and scientific sessions at the week-long event, Adrian and Paddy used the opportunity to meet some 650 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in radiology.
Medical Equipment Showcased at RSNA 2022
Among the equipment showcased were:
- Artificial intelligence/Machine learning
- Breast imaging
- Computed tomography
- DICOM (communication and management of medical imaging information and related data)
- X-Ray
- Ultrasound
- Radiography
- PACS (picture archiving and communication systems)
- MRI
- 3D printing
Elsewhere, an innovations programme featuring corporate symposiums, lunch and learn sessions, virtual and in-person product presentations and vendor workshops provided medical OEMs with the opportunity to educate delegates on the benefits of cutting-edge technology.
Key takeaways from the event
In an educational session about enhancing the ‘patient journey’ with imaging, Arun Krishnaraj, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Radiology and Medical Imaging at the University of Virginia Health System, spoke about using Technology to Enhance the Patient Journey.
“We must adapt to the changing world of health care by leveraging our technologies to make the patient experience better, not more cumbersome and difficult,” he said. “Imaging informatics tools—at least in the domain of imaging—can deliver on the promise of making the patient journey one that is of high value.”
Elsewhere, popular themes included:
Artificial Intelligence
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in diagnostic imaging to provide early detection of a wide range of clinical conditions is growing and fast becoming the norm.
In a dedicated AI Showcase, David Wilson of Enlitic, a healthcare IT company, provided delegates with ‘5 Steps to Your AI Strategy.’
After that, AGFA Healthcare spoke about ‘Augmented Radiology: Evidence-based implantation of AI and the future of Radiology’.
Siemens Healthineers demonstrated ‘How to leverage artificial intelligence for a holistic lung cancer screening.’
And XACT Robotics explained how its ‘ACE Robotic System with XTEND delivers accuracy, consistency and efficiency.’
Elsewhere, RSNA 2022 organisers invited delegates to an ‘Imaging AI in Practice demo’. Here delegates learnt how to embed AI into workflows.
3D printing
An education exhibit highlighted the role of 3D Printing in Complex Surgery.
Delegates learnt that 3D printing is revolutionising clinical care. And “Imaging is a key factor in the development of 3D models which can help surgeons reduce time and costs and improve outcomes for the most challenging surgeries.”
Among the OEMs speaking on the topic, Devarsh Vyas of 3D Systems spoke of ‘Maximising the value of 3D printing labs at the point of care.’
Keeping delegates entertained
When RSNA delegates managed to grab a spare moment, they were treated to a popular ‘Test your diagnostic chops Image Interpretation Session’ and a team-based radiology game show.
Elsewhere speedy delegates raised $29,000 for RSNA Research & Education Foundation at the RSNA 2022 5k fun run.
To sum up
Veritek’s overall takeaway from RSNA 2022 was that technology plays a vital role alongside skilled and dedicated professionals in earlier prediction and tackling our most significant health issues.
While AI can help to accelerate diagnosis, technology also enables mobility, meaning physical location no longer bounds healthcare workers.
And for Veritek as a medical equipment maintenance partner, predictive maintenance enabled by IIoT allows us to support the work of OEMs and radiology staff by using our flexibility to prevent issues and ensure the reliable and effective treatment of patients.
